What counts as a country?

We count 195 countries: 193 UN members plus Vatican City and Palestine. Each country belongs to one continent. Russia is in Europe; Turkey, Cyprus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan are in Asia; Egypt is in Africa. Central America and the Caribbean belong to North America. Territories and Kosovo are excluded. Airport-only transit does not count by default.

Atlas: Natural Earth via world-atlas 2.0.2. Miller cylindrical projection (not equal-area). Generalized 1:50m overview; local 1:10m detail at regional zoom. Vatican City has a degenerate polygon and always uses a locator. Other tiny countries retain locators until their polygons are large enough. Territories are context only; boundaries follow the source’s conventions.
